Brand new in today we have two new small ranges of novelty and nursery fabric, as well as this month's Moda jelly roll and layer cake. First of the new ranges is the Two by Two fabric collection by Fabri-Quilt, three prints with designs based on the Noah's ark and the flood story featuring arks, sea creatures and fish - great for childrens' projects!

The other new range in today is also ideal for younger children, the Susybee Lewe fabric range featuring sheep characters designed by the acclaimed artist Susy Bleasby. Brand new in today we have two new patchwork fabric ranges from RJR Fabrics, gorgeous coordinating 100% cotton quality fabrics. Firstly we have the Sew Heavenly patchwork fabrics, a small set of celestial designs designed by Dan Morris featuring suns, moons and stars in blues, yellows and creams - great to give a classic feel but with out of the ordinary themes.

We have been increasing our range of tools and waddings this month, to include some brand new products as well as some perennial favourites! New in the wadding section is the Sew Simple heat resistant wadding - great for projects such as pot holders and oven gloves, where heat will be an issue - and also the new Heat Press batting together, a wadding seam tape that can be used to join two pieces of wadding without extra bulk or sewing.

Also new in, we have the Microstitch basting gun. This tool is extremely popular with quilters as it makes basting the layers of a quilt much quicker, with tiny tacks (the smallest on the market) that can be sewn over and easily removed. The basting gun comes with 2280 tacks in black and white, and we also have spare tacks available separately.

The Clover Mini Iron II is another favourite with quilters, the small ironing tip ideal for working with bias tape and applique, and its new and improved design with interchangeable tips making it perfect for all kinds of craft applications. Keep it safe on the move with the Mini Iron II tote bag, specially designed to house the iron and spare tips safely!

If you enjoy English paper piecing with hexagons, but hate the tedium of cutting out and pinning the paper hexagons, we have a new product that would be ideal - packs of die cut hexagons cut from freezer paper, in two different sizes. With 2 inch and 3 inch freezer paper hexagons available, you can just iron on to the fabric (shiny side down), and they will stick for you to cut out and tack around, then will peel off easily when you've finished! Brilliant as a time saver, and to ensure you get accurate hexagons.

New arrivals and re-opening times!

Firstly, thank you for all your comments - our new baby girl, Kira, arrived on the 13th May, and is now home safe and sound. We have been in the Singleton hospital NICU until last Thursday, so are a bit behind with the re-opening of the shop - she had some serious lung problems at birth, but she is fine now, and very cheeky with it - as can be seen, she is very fond of blowing rasbrries! We are now open for orders, however to give the maternity cover (my brother Geraint!) time to learn the ropes no orders will be dispatched until next week.

Obviously, our heartfelt thanks go to the staff of the NICU, and I would like to draw attention to the charity Project Linus, which is one that we quilters can contribute to. Although just a small part of what goes on in the special care baby units, having seen the quilts used by premature babies, and my little one, first hand, I can honestly say they are very much appreciated by parents and staff alike.

Hi all, you may have seen our website and shop is temporarily closed - as our newsletter subscribers will already know, this is because I am expecting a baby (due today!), so for the moment we are not taking any orders online or otherwise as there is the possibility we will not be able to get them sent out, as well as the fact that moving around at the moment is becoming increasingly difficult!

As we are a home-based business, we will be remaining closed until baby is safely arrived, home and settled in - all going well we will be re-opening by the end of May. Thank you for all your good wishes,

Designed by Marsha McCloskey for Clothworks, the Companions range is a set of fabrics designed for fabric collectors (read stash builders!) to round out certain parts of their colour palettes - we have four different prints in varying shades of red, which are always hard to come by!

We have been running low on fun novelty prints, so we have replenished this category with a selection of ranges by Makower, all ideal for children's quilts in bright, fun designs and colours! Firstly we have the Farm Corner patchwork fabric range, a selection of prints featuring farmyard animals such as sheep, cows, horses, chickens and more - a perennial favourite with youngsters, you can't go wrong with a farm themed quilt! Next up is the Makower Pirates range - pirates have never been more popular with the kids, and these swashbuckling prints featuring skull and crossbones, ships, treasure maps and swordfighting, adventuring pirates are bound to be a hit! New in - rotary blade sharpeners and Olfa chenille cutter!

Have you ever bought a brand new blade for your rotary cutter then dropped it the same day you put it on the cutter? This is one of my pet hates, as it always seems to happen and then cutting is made a nightmare by the little dull spots on the blade! With our new rotary cutting blade sharpeners you can get rid of dull spots and burrs easily, as well as prolonging the life of the blade - just rotate the blade in the tool, first on the rough side then the smooth side, and a razor sharp edge is soon restored. Having tried this yesterday, I can confirm it works, although as noted on the packet, the first time you sharpen a blade takes a bit more time and effort than the subsequent sharpenings.

We have 28mm rotary blade sharpeners and 45mm rotary blade sharpeners in stock now, and they are sure to be a good investment if you do a lot of rotary cutting!

Also brand new to the website is the Olfa chenille cutter, as well as the chenille cutter spare blades. Use the Olfa chenille cutter to make your own chenille quilts, cutting multiple layers of fabric, felt fleece and more! The cutter has 4 different guide sizes for precise cutting from narrow to wide width, and the special disc blade provides 24 new sharp cutting edges. It is suitable for left or right handed use, and comes with a handy carrying and storage case and full instructions.

New in today we have two new jelly rolls and layer cakes from Moda. Firstly, the Lumiere de Noel range from French General, a selection of florals, tonals and stripes in their signature vintage French style - although it has a Christmassy name, the prints are not overtly Christmassy and can be used all year round! In gorgeous reds, creams and taupes, this is a lovely range for any fans of the French General designs.
The other new jelly roll and layer cake in today comes from Sandy Gervais for Moda, with her Awesome range. Brand new in today we have fabrics from three new ranges, as well as a selection of new fat quarter packs and stash pack. First up we have the Where The Boyz Are quilt fabric range from Benartex, a fun collection designed by Mary Lou Wiedman for Benartex, ideal for quilts for little boys. Next, we have 2 new ranges from Free Spirit fabrics - Hope Valley and Leanika. We love to see our fabrics used properly, and the photographs below (in progress and the finished article) show how quilting fabrics can be used to great effect! Sent in by one of our customers, this quilt is made using fabrics from our blue stash packs, and how good does it look? Just to make those of us who quilt on a regular basis feel a bit more abashed, this quilt was made by a 15 year old, on her first attempt - I'm off now to get more practice in!

This week we have added loads of new fabrics to the website - firstly the good enough to eat Sweet Treats range from RJR fabrics, these patchwork prints feature sweets, doughnuts and cupcakes, just don't use them when you're hungry! Next, we have a couple of fabrics each from the Where's The Cat and Tribute to Vincent patchwork fabric ranges, both by Classic Cottons - the Where's the Cat fabrics feature pawprints on brown tones, ideal for cat lovers, and the Tribute to Vincent fabrics are a lovely pair of tonals in brown and orange in the style of Vincent Van Gogh's famous paintings. Finally we have added a brand new range of Black and White prints by Makower, crisp designs with musical, floral and spotty themes.

Brand new in we have three fabrics from the Springs Creative Bazooples patchwork fabric range, by Vicki Schreiner Designs. Brand new to the website we have now uploaded the Classic Cottons Changing Seasons collection, a full range of 25 tone on tone fabrics in jewel bright colours graduating from light to dark in pinks, purples, blues, greens and oranges. These fabrics make perfect background fabrics, or can be used to great effect on their own - check out the quilt patterns available on Classic Cottons website for two stunning quilts made from the Changing Seasons range.

Also new this week to the website we have introduced our colour coordinated strip rolls - for anyone who enjoys the new phenomenon of strip pieced quilts, these lovely little bundles of 20 2.5" strips in greens, blues, yellows and pinks take the hard work out of cutting the strips - and they look so sweet you'll find it difficult to unravel them! Also in the range is a Changing Seasons strip roll of the full 25 fabrics in the collection.

Quilt finished!

Well, the quilt is finished, finally, from all those squares and triangles cut previously! The design is from Celia Eddy's Quilt Block Bible, a block call the 'Ribbon Quilt Block' - this is a great little book, full of inspiration. I used Hobbs wadding (my personal favourite), and quilted the whole thing 'in the ditch' using invisible quilting thread on top, and a taupe thread on the bottom, following the patterns of the ribbons, so the pattern was repeated on the back. Also, rather than using plain backing fabric, I used a lovely light brown backing fabric, so if turned back the backing matches the front really well. Onwards and upwards now to the next project!

September's jelly roll and layer cake

The Morris Workshop jelly roll and layer cake was so popular last month, it has now sold out - we have now added this month's Moda Bundles, from the Vine Creek range. Inspired by a rusty sign for an old town in Kansas, these beautiful florals in muted greens, dark blues and reds would be ideal for a traditional quilt.

New bag making products and quilting tools added to site

We have today increased our bag making supplies selection on the website, with the addition of several Clover bag handle designs, as well as bag strapping for rucksacks and backpacks. Although we had the plastic buckles and D-rings, only now have we added the strapping, so you can use all three together for an easy bag strap! The Clover bag handles are excellent quality, and will make for a really smart bag (especially now that stylish shopping bags are a must!).

Also added today are a couple of new tools for marking quilts - the really useful Clover mesh canvas for the easy transfer of quilting designs from layout to fabric, and a pencil sharpener perfect for fabric pencils. To use the mesh transfer canvas, you can trace out designs using a pencil onto the matte side of the canvas, then lift off and place onto the quilt top, and retrace. You will be left with a dotted line where the pencil goes through the holes, just join up the dots and there is the quilting design! Using the matte side of the canvas and a water soluble pencil, you can wipe it clean ready to use again - the Clover Chaco pens are also recommended by Clover to use with the canvas.

Well, I have a new quilt order to work on - all the pieces are cut and I've started sewing, it's going to be a long process, take a look at the piles of patches above! The fabric is from our Makower Quilter's Palette range in beige, and I'll post more pictures as it goes on!

In other news we have new patchwork fabric ranges in this week, from Marcus fabrics we have the Gallery In Red range, lovely red and ivory two tone fabrics, and a fun new range in from Windham Fabrics - Traffic Jam. Great for playmats, this range has roads and cars that would be perfect for a little boy!

Quilt Association summer exhibition

Well, to get the ball rolling we thought we'd share the news of the Quilt Association's summer exhibition, held at the Minerva centre at Llanidloes between the 13th July and the 12th September.

As a big fan of Welsh quilting (details and history can be found on our Welsh quilting page), the Quilt Association is one of my favourite organisations. Although we can't be there this year, the summer exhibition is always worth a visit, with antique and contemporary quilts on show, and a number of workshops available to join up to.
